If you're super-eager to meet like-minded people, do an online search for crossdressing / transgender support groups -- such as Tri-Ess (www.tri-ess.org), or other transgender outreach councils for example. You might be surprised to find a local organization or local chapter of a national organization within driving distance.

Craigslist does seem like it could be a little creepy but the fact that you're thinking of using it should tell you that there are probably other non-creepy people thinking of using it too. You can always just talk to someone online, then on the phone, then meet up if you feel really comfortable with them. The only place I've used so far to meet people was Adult Friend Finder, its not perfect but it seems less creepy then craiglist. Free membership is decent(it's what I have) You can't see anything but the profile picture but you can send and receive messages and people can and will send you full size pics through the AFF messaging center.
